3 easy steps to make Google Docs your default office suite application

Why should you make Google Docs the application that will open your documents? Well, if you are like me, and not doing so much work with documents, spreadsheets or presentations it is no need to have some hundreds MB hardisk space filled with a application that you will run rarely. On the other hand, if you are working daily with documents, Google Docs can save you some time letting you easily share your work. The best thing is that you don't need to install anything and you can access Google Docs from anywhere by simply pointing the web browser to http://docs.google.com
Now lets get to the point of this post and tell you that these steps are for FireFox users and take less then 5 minutes to complete.

Step 1

Ok, first, lets make Google Docs work offline. Click the offline link in the upper right corner of your Google Docs page. A dialog box will pop-up where you will be prompted to get Gears extension for your browser or, if you already have Gears installed, to enable offline access for Google Docs.

Step 2

  Now that we have also offline access to Google Docs lets call for some help that will set for us Google Docs as the default office suite. Lets get the Google Toolbar for FireFox, probably the best toolbar that any browser must have.

Step 3

Now you can check what types of files Google Docs will open. Click on the Settings button from the right side of the toolbar then, click Options... In this window, make sure that the Docs & Spreadsheeds checkbox is marked then click on the File Settings... button. From the File Settings window you can chose witch file types do you want to open with Google Docs and witch methods you want to use for opening files.

SysInternals Utilities are a set of tools that help you troubleshoot and diagnose Windows systems and applications. Microsoft has gathered all the programs in one complete suite of power tools. Even so you can still download each program separately at Microsoft TechNet ( the SysInternals suite is the first item in the list ).
Users that already work with this tools will say, what's the point of this post? Well, SysInternals have launched a beta service, SysInternals Live, that lets you execute any SysInternals tool directly from the web. Like they say:

"Simply enter a tool’s Sysinternals Live path into Windows Explorer or a command prompt as \\live.sysinternals.com\tools\ or view the entire Sysinternals Live tools directory in a browser at http://live.sysinternals.com"

In my previous post, Web applications, the right way to the future I've pointed you to some great web apps lists from where you can chose the right application for you or your company. I've posted a link to Google app engine powered web applications to. Why I mentioned it? Because I will tell you about Google and my point of view about how Google is in a race by him self to conquer the Internet.
Now, to get to the subject, since Google have left developers create web applications on the same engine that their own applications run will attract more users on the Google's side, since users with a Google account can simply log in to any Google app engine powered web application.
Announcing the open sign-ups at Google app engine now every one can try to create his own web application. They even posted on Google app engine blog the expected pricing as follows:

• $0.10 - $0.12 per CPU core-hour

• $0.15 - $0.18 per GB-month of storage

• $0.11 - $0.13 per GB outgoing bandwidth

• $0.09 - $0.11 per GB incoming bandwidth

That if your application will need more that the free account will give you, that means:

Now, if you want that your application to work offline too, you can enhance your web app with Google gears API. Not to mention that 2 new APIs have been released from Google, the image manipulation API and memcache API. You can boost your web app even more by using all the other APIs that Google gives to you.
I wonder witch big company can follow Google in this race on conquering the Internet !?

Web applications, the right way to the future

There are so many web sites these days offering all kind of things to do online and they keep appearing with newer or better services provided to us for free. I have an 20 GB hardisk on my machine and I have no intention to change it, meaning less money spend for my PC, even better, I don't need to spend money on commercial software to have some great feature that will ease my work. I just need to look for the right web application and I'm done. I have my work done and my wallet safe.
